Audio Description - Audience Development - New Directions
Project 3D is the result of VSA arts of NH's goal of building a statewide infrastructure for live audio description so that the Blindness Community has access to quality multi-sensory experiences at NH cultural organizations.

What is Audio Description?
Audio description (AD) is the narrative technique that renders visual images of theater performances more accessible to people who are Blind or have low vision.

  • AD is a prepared and rehearsed narration of the visual aspects of a production.
  • It is presented concisely between the spoken dialogue of the performance.
  • The describer narrates those visual elements that convey meaning or insight into the story line, character development, and the relationships among characters.
  • In addition, any visual effects unique to a theater experience are described, such as the physical attributes of the theater.

Audio Description not only makes a performance more accessible to people who are Blind or have low vision. It represents a new, optional way for everyone to experience theater.
